The Town of Winchester is seeking POSTC certified and entry level applicants for the position of police officer.  Applications will be accepted throughout 2024. Our hiring process is on-going and based on existing vacancies. As of May 2024, we have three vacant positions, and we anticipate additional openings.  To be considered we encourage interested applicants to apply ASAP.  Applications and qualifications will be reviewed when vacancies within the department occur. The Town of Winchester participates in the CPCA entry level written test program.  Only individuals who take and pass the CPCA written test will be permitted to apply to the Winchester Police Department. Entry level applicants must also have a valid 40 % C.H.I.P score within six months of the application date. Go to for additional test dates and information. Certified applicants must have a valid Connecticut POSTC certification card.

The basic work week consists of three eight-hour-shifts: Midnight (0000-0800), Day (0800-1600), & Evening (1600-0000). All shifts work alternating schedules of five consecutive days on & three consecutive days off, followed by five consecutive days on & two consecutive days off. Shift schedules change October 1st and April 1st each year and are bid by seniority.

SALARY RANGE & BENEFITS (Effective 07/01/2024):

Entry-level officer salary range $82,520.98 to $85,275.62.  Four steps over a five-year period. Shift premium pay for evening and midnight shift. Connecticut's Municipal Employees Retirement System (CMERS) retirement plan. Life insurance, healthcare & dental plan. Paid dry cleaning for uniforms. Education incentives and tuition reimbursement. Entry level applicants must have:  a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, must be a U.S. citizen by the date of appointment, must be 21 years old by the application closing date, and must not have been convicted by a court of any felony, any class A or class B misdemeanor or have committed any act which would constitute perjury or false statement.
