Job Title: Property Crime Scene Technician
Job Purpose |
Supports the Department mission by supporting the investigative process with crime scene support. Performs lab analysis of incoming evidence and ensures that all evidence is submitted to the appropriate laboratory within statute guidelines. Also supports the Department by performing handling and dispositioning of evidence per statute to protect the integrity of the evidence. |
Job Scope |
May direct the activities of other co-workers with regard to employing best practices with regard to crime scene investigation techniques. Exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative. Is vested with moderate decision-making latitude within parameters prescribed by the department’s policies, procedures, and guidelines. Interfaces frequently with the general public; state, federal, and county law enforcement agencies; municipal court personnel and police departments of other municipalities; and department personnel. |
Essential Duties & Responsibilities |
1. Store and retrieve all property and evidence collected, seized, or kept by the police department assuring a continuous chain of custody. 2. Maintain all records related to property and evidence. 3. Maintain asset inventory for the police department. 4. Manage the delivery of evidence to and from court, laboratories, prosecutor's offices and other locations. 5. Maintain knowledge of the law and policies regarding the management, including the process for final disposition of evidence and property. 6. Respond to crime scenes to document and process, utilizing notes, photographs, and sketches. 7. Process the scene and collect relevant physical evidence in support of the investigation, to include, but not limited to, biological, fingerprint and trace evidence. 8. Assure that evidence is collected and stored according to best practices. 9. Perform laboratory analysis of incoming evidence utilizing best practices. 10. Write accurate and concise reports regarding the actions taken at the scene. 11. Provide technical support and training, pertaining to crime scene investigation and evidence and property handling, for all divisions within the Police Department. 12. Arrange for abandoned or forfeited property and evidence to go to auction. 13. Testify as required in court regarding the results of analysis and examination of physical evidence. |
