Job Announcement

The Stonington Police Department seeks qualified applicants for the position of Animal Control Officer. Animal control officers must have knowledge of a wide variety of animal species, animal first aid, animal care and nutrition, humane capture tools and techniques, animal behavior and public relations.

Animal Control is a sub-division of the police department. The mission of an Animal Control Officer is to ensure the safety and quality of life in town with regard to domestic animals. The Animal Control Officer (ACO) accomplishes this task through strict enforcement of all applicable animal control laws and diligent investigation of complaints and violations of such laws.

Full-Time Animal Control Officer Job Description:

Investigates complaints referred to the Stonington Police Department on roaming, injured, lost, found, barking, vicious, biting and dead domestic animals or specified dangerous wildlife as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a G.E.D.
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America.
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license

Hiring Process:

The selection process will include, at minimum, a detailed review of your application packet, and the successful completion of the Department’s selection process which includes but may not be limited to the following:

  • Background Packet Review
  • Oral Board 70% passing
  • Detailed Background Investigation
  • Psychological Exam
  • Medical Exam
  • Command Level Interview
  • Board of Police Commissioners Review

Salary and Benefits

  • $23.52 per hour
  • Benefit package to include: Health Care Plan, Sick Time, Vacation and Personal Time and 11 paid holidays

General Duties

  1. Receive written and oral instructions from Shift Commander.
  2. Plan, organize and perform work according to standardized procedure.
  3. Investigate animal-related complaints.
  4. Issue summonses for violations of applicable State and local laws and Ordinances.
  5. Send out quarantine notices.
  6. Coordinate the destruction of domestic and dangerous wild animals in accordance with State and local laws and ordinances.
  7. Enforce required inoculations as prescribed by State and local regulations as they may apply.
  8. Pick up stray or roaming domestic animals.
  9. Keep logs or other records pertaining to animal-related incidents.
  10. Arrange for medical attention for injured or sick animals.
  11. Appear in Court when presence is required for animal-related matters
  12. Coordinate the care of impounded animals to include personal attention such as cleaning pens, feeding animals, etc., or arranging for such services.
  13. Patrol areas of Town which have high or unusual animal-related complaint occurrence.
  14. Utilize computer terminal for data entry and retrieval (IMC records management system)
  15. Receive and participates in on-going training as required by the Chief of Police.
  16. Submit relevant forms required by Shift Commander.
  17. May trap and pick up wild animals.
  18. Perform other duties and/or tasks as assigned.

 

The Stonington Police Department provides the highest quality law enforcement services to the Towns of Pawcatuck, Stonington, Stonington Borough, as well as parts of Mystic and Old Mystic. The Town of Stonington is approximately 44 square miles with a year-round population of approximately 18,500. The Stonington Police Department patrols the area around two of New England’s largest tourist attractions in the Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium.
