Police Officer

Under general supervision, a Police Officer is responsible for the performance of law enforcement duties to protect life and property in accordance with applicable laws, to carry out special assignments as necessary, and other related duties as assigned.

A wide variety of assignments are available which include Patrol, Detectives, K-9 Officer, Traffic, Marine Patrol, Juvenile & Elderly, Bike Patrol, School Resource, and Special Response Team.

Police Officer – Recruit

During employment within this classification, employees will attend a certified police training academy designed to provide an overview of the Criminal Justice System which includes training in various laws, police procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid, weapons, and physical fitness. 

Candidates Certified in Another State

The Westerly Police Department will conduct an evaluation of all out-of-state training. Rhode Island POST is the sole authority on applicable training and determines whether the candidate must attend an abbreviated academy, or a regular police academy. If an academy is required, the candidate will be hired as a Police Officer – Recruit. Upon completion of the academy, promotion will be made to Police Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years old.
  • Recommended 60 college credits, or two years of active military experience, or two years of prior full-time municipal or law enforcement experience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

Selection Process

Applicants will need to pass a written and physical agility examination. All qualified applications will be invited to appear before an oral board. Applicants passing the oral board examination will be placed on an eligibility list based on their oral board rankings. Prospective employees will undergo a thorough background investigation including a medical, psychological and drug/alcohol screen.

Starting Salary

The starting salary for an entry level officer is $26.30 per hour increasing up to $49.68 per hour, making the Westerly Police Department one of the most competitive salary ranges in the State.

The Police Department is anticipating to hire from this eligibility list, which will be maintained for one year.

Written Exam

Date:   September 18th, 2021 at 8:00am

Location to be determined

Preparing for the Written Exam

The written exam typically lasts 3 hours.  This is a video exam that contains four sections:

  1. Roll Call Briefing
  2. Training Session
  3. Situational Judgment
  4. Multiple Choice

The written exam will be graded on-site. Candidates are expected to dress is professional attire. Individuals successfully passing the written examination will proceed to the physical agility testing.

Physical Agility

Applicants have the option of scheduling an agility test at https://www.fit2serveri.com/ OR they can take the Westerly PD Physical Agility test listed on the below date and time:

Date:  September 18th, 2021

Tentative Time - 11:30am **to start after the written test is completed.

Location- More information will be provided testing day. 

The physical agility will encompass the following activities:

  1. 1 Minute Push-up
  2. 1.5 Mile Run
  3. 1 Minute Sit-up
  4. 300 Meter Run

**In order to participate in the Physical Agility Testing, you must provide your Physical Agility Wavier, signed off by your physician. The Fitness Test Medical Certificate, in the Physical Agility Waiver packet, should be provided on the day of testing, not to be faxed or mailed beforehand.

The physical agility test is considered demanding and it is vitally important for applicants to properly prepare for the test.  The following are suggestions applicants can use to adequately prepare for the test:

Prep Mentally & Physically

The applicant should prepare both physically and mentally for the test.  An example of mentally preparing for this test would including having a positive mindset prior to and during the test.  It is recommended that applicants should have recovered at least 24-48 hours from any other physical activity prior to this testing.  The applicant should also hydrate properly, at least 24 hours prior to participating in this testing.

Come Properly Hydrated & Nourished

The applicant should hydrate properly, at least 24 hours prior to participating in this testing.  It may be helpful to also consume a light meal 1-2 hours prior to the physical agility testing, as the applicant should have adequate energy levels to help facilitate a better performance.  Proper rest prior to testing is also recommended.

Oral Board Examination

Dates: September 27-29, 2021 (anticipated)

Final Interview – Background

Candidates who successfully pass the oral boards will be invited to a final interview with the Police Chief and Town Manager.  

Candidates who are selected from the final interview will undergo a very thorough background-check.
