CAPE MAY POLICE DEPARTMENT
IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR:

Special Law Enforcement Officer Class I

GENERAL DUTIES

SLEO I Officers are empowered to issue summons for motor vehicle violations, city ordinance violations, petty disorderly persons violations and disorderly persons violations. Their primary duty is crowd control. Many of these officers are assigned to the bicycle patrol units, the beach area, boardwalk and mall beats.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

All applicants must be:

  • (18) years of age or older
  • A United States Citizen
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Pass a background Investigation, Medical Examination

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

SLEO I Officers receive two weeks of formal training (80 hours) at the Cape May County Police Academy. Recruits will be taught criminal law, report writing, motor vehicle law, use of force responsibility to the community, CPR and first aid, handcuffing, baton and self defense techniques.

High School students must follow a weekend academy schedule.  

SALARY

  • Recruits will earn minimum wage during their training at the police academy. High School student are not employed while attending the Police Academy and will not be paid.  
  • $16.00 per hour (40 hour work week) after graduation or upon hiring for high school students. 

* All Special Officers will receive a $0.50 hourly increase, in salary, each year they return for employment.

ABOUT CAPE MAY AND THE POLICE DEPARTMENT

  • Cape May Police Department handles calls for Cape May City, West Cape May and Cape May Point.
  • The Cape May Police Department responds to approximately 14,000 calls per year.
  • Cape May is a city at the southern tip of Cape May Peninsula with approximately 5,000 residents.
  • In the summer months, Cape May's population is expanded by as many as 40,000 to 50,000 visitors a day.
