HOW TO APPLY

 If you meet the basic requirements and wish to become a police officer with the City of New London you must first take the Police Officer Written Examinations.  There are two options accepted by the City of New London for taking the written examination.  Fees, requirements, and terms associated with the written test are specified by the testing facility.

ELIGIBILITY

The Police Officer Standard and Training Council regulation stipulates a candidate must be 21 years old to attend the Academy.  In order to take this examination, candidates must be 21 years of age prior to the Date of Examination.

GENERAL DUTIES

This is a patrol officer position involving the responsibility for the protection of life and property; the prevention, detection and investigation of crime; and maintaining law and order. The work necessitates the use of independent and mature judgment in making investigations and inspections and in deciding what course of action to take in emergency situations.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be 21 or older
  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid State of CT drivers license
  • Must be physically able to perform the duties of a Police Officer
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation, polygraph, medical and psychological examinations along with controlled substance screening
  • Must be in and remain in good physical condition


TESTING REQUIREMENTS

Candidate’s must successfully complete the written test administered by the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association (CPCA) or the Law Enforcement Council of Southeast Connecticut (L.E.C.). Upon obtaining a competent numerical grade, which is predetermined by the New London Police Department, candidates will be notified of a check in and start time for the agility examination by a posting on the selected website, which will be available after the closing date. No one will be admitted into the exam after the specified start time. A valid Driver’s License is mandatory. Candidates will not be permitted to take the test without a valid driver’s license. Prompt attendance is crucial.

HIRING PROCESS

THE APPLICATION AND EXAMINATION PROCESS WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: 

  1. Application: City of New London Employment Application through www.PoliceApp.com/NewLondonCT. You are encouraged to also provide a resume.
  2. Agility Test: Must have considerable agility and endurance. Applicants who fail to meet the minimum standard set as passing for the Agility Test will not be considered a qualified candidate and can not proceed with any further testing. Candidates must pass the physical agility test at the Physical Performance examination's 40th percentile administered by the agency as part of the conditional offer of employment. C.H.I.P. (Complete Health & Injury Prevention) certification cards will not be accepted.
  3. Technical/Oral Exam: A panel consisting of professionals and a moderator will conduct the oral exam. Candidates will be notified after the agility exam of the place and time of the exam. Scores will be mailed to the candidates. Applicants who do not meet the minimum standard will not be considered a qualified candidate and can not proceed with any further testing.
  4. Eligibility List: A ranked Eligibility List will be created.  As positions become available, the Personnel Department will contact individuals on the Eligibility List. The Eligibility List will remain in effect for a period of one year after the testing has been completed.
  5. Background Investigation: Packets will be distributed at the agility test to those applicants who have passed, and should be returned upon arrival for the technical/oral examination.
  6. Polygraph: To be administered to those candidates selected by the Police Department, after receipt of all candidates’ scores.
  7. Psychological Examination: Pass/Fail – To be administered to those candidates selected by the Police Department to proceed in the process.
  8. Physical Examination: Pass/Fail – To be administered by the City physician to those candidates selected by the Police Department to proceed in the process.
  9. Chief of Police Interview:  To be administered to candidate(s) selected by the Police Department, after receipt of all candidates’ scores.
  10. Pre-POSTC Academy Physical Agility Test:   Within 30 days prior to entry into POSTC Academy, the New London Police Department will administer the Pre-POSTC Academy agility test.  Successful completion of this agility test is mandatory for entry into the POSTC Academy.

Please note that failure of any portion of the aforementioned testing process shall result in disqualification from further continuation in the hiring process.
