Assistant Animal Control Officer Job Description:

Investigates complaints referred to the Southington Police Department on roaming, injured, lost, found, barking, vicious, biting and dead domestic animals or specified dangerous wild life as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a G.E.D.
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America.
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license

Testing Requirements:

  • Candidates must have a passing score of at least 70% on the CPCA Written Examination for Animal Control Officer in order to submit their application.

Hiring Process:

The selection process will include, at minimum, a detailed review of your application packet, and the successful completion of the Department’s selection process which includes but may not be limited to the following:

  • CPCA Written Examination 70% passing
  • Background Packet Review
  • Oral Board 70% passing
  • Detailed Background Investigation
  • Psychological Exam
  • Medical Exam
  • Command Level Interview
  • Board of Police Commissioners Review

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary $61,564.00
  • Union Position (LEAS)
  • The Town of Southington participates in the State of Connecticut CMERS Program (25 year pension plan)
  • Benefit package to include: Health Care Plan, Longevity Pay, Sick Time, Vacation and Personal Time and 6 paid holidays (not included in the salary figure shown)

 

General Duties

Receive written, oral and computerized instructions from Shift Commander.

Plan, organize and perform work according to standardized procedure.

  1. Investigate animal-related complaints.
  2. Issue summonses for violations of applicable State and local laws and Ordinances.
  3. Send out quarantine notices.
  4. Prepare monthly reports to the State of Connecticut in such a manner and time frame prescribed by the Chief of Police.
  5. Prepare annual report of activities for the town.
  6. Collect and forwards fees to Chief of Police with monthly reports.
  7. Coordinate the destruction of domestic and dangerous wild animals in accordance with State and local laws and ordinances.
  8. Enforce required inoculations as prescribed by State and local regulations as they may apply.
  9. Pick up stray or roaming domestic animals.
  10. Keep logs or other records pertaining to animal-related incidents.
  11. Arrange for medical attention for injured or sick animals.
  12. Appear in Court when presence is required for animal- related matters
  13. Conduct license surveys to ensure that residents are complying with laws and regulations.
  14. Coordinate the care of impounded animals to include personal attention such as cleaning pens, feeding animals, etc., or arranging for such services.
  15. Patrol areas of Town which have high or unusual animal-related complaint occurrence.
  16. Meet with Chief of Police or his designate to discuss activity.
  17. May utilize computer terminal for data entry and retrieval.
  18. Receive and participates in on-going training as required by the Chief of Police.
  19. Submit relevant forms required by Shift Commander.
  20. May trap and pick up wild animals.
  21. Perform other duties and/or tasks as assigned.

About Us:
The Southington Police Department was organized in 1936. It is governed by a Board of Police Commissioners, consisting of five civilian members. It is commanded by the Chief of Police, two Captains, three Lieutenants, eleven Sergeants, and seven Detectives. It is currently comprised of sixty six sworn regular and six sworn supernumerary officers plus 19 civilian personnel, including two Animal Control Officers. Southington is geographically located almost in the center of the State of Connecticut. The Department is primarily responsible for the public safety of the approximately 43,000 residents of the community and patrolling the roads within our 36.5 square miles
