PUBLIC SAFETY DISPATCHER

PART TIME

WATERTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT

Hourly Rate $24.17 (probation)

$27.31 after 12 months

The Watertown Communication Department is seeking to hire a part time public safety dispatcher for at a minimum two 8-hour shift per week at the rate of $24.17 per hour. The position could be up to 40 hours per week and could include weekends, holidays, and nights. Applicant is preferred to have knowledge of the Watertown area, be able to multitask, and be comfortable with making sudden decisions.  Computer experience is a must. A State of Connecticut telecommunicator certification is a plus. Please submit your application online through PoliceApp.com

The Watertown Police Department is a Tier III State of Connecticut accredited agency that proudly provides services to Watertown and Oakville.  The Watertown Communications Department dispatches the Watertown Police and Fire Departments.  The best applicant will show themselves to be motivated, a quick learner, a team player, and will recognize dispatching is a rewarding career, as well as a 365/24/7 operation.  We are looking for a person that sees the benefits of being a dispatcher and wants to bring their enthusiasm to our great team!

HOURS REQUIRED:

Hours:  16 minimum up to 40+ hours depending on need and seniority – varies weekly.  Required to fill in where needed.

PART TIME EMPLOYEES RECEIVE:

Second and third shift differential and Overtime where applicable

Holiday pay at 8 hours, plus 12 hours, for shift worked, overtime on holidays is double time.

Earned Vacation, Sick and Personal time, pro-rated, based on hours worked in the designated 12-month allotment, including during training period.

Eligibility to participate in the retirement programs.

*First preference is given to existing part time employees when a full-time position becomes available. *

You always work with a partner and are welcomed and encouraged to participate in department and community-based functions.

 

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Answers emergency and non-emergency phone calls for service.  

Monitor Police, Fire and Town Highway, State Police Hotline and Mutual Aid radio traffic.

Follow Emergency Medical Dispatch protocols.

Operates a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and multiple police related computer programs as well as Microsoft products.

Provides assistance and information as requested by other police and fire agencies.   

Assists the public in matters of general police information.

Obtains information on wanted, missing property and persons and motor vehicle/operator information from COLLECT/NCIC.

Partake in continued education.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

*Must have an exceptional ability to communicate (Verbal and written)

*Genuine ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, and the general public.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to work under stressful situations while maintaining composure, make knowledge-based decisions, be professional and truthful, have an ability to relay numerous details with good memory retention during and after a call for service and always maintain the highest level of confidentiality. 

The hired dispatcher must follow policy and procedures for Communications, Police and Fire Departments, Town of Watertown Employee Handbook and State of Connecticut CJIS.
