Calais Fire Department
Calais shares three international border crossings and a longstanding history with St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada.
Calais has historically been a city of commerce and is recognized as the primary shopping center of eastern Washington County and Charlotte County, New Brunswick. Currently retail, service, and construction businesses are the primary components of the Calais economy.
Calais is home to 3,123 residents and services a regional population of 15,000. Calais has worked to bolster its economy by revitalization of its downtown and development of an industrial park complete with sewer, water, three-phase power and transportation facilities. Calais is designated as a HUB zone for economic development. Calais has a remarkable endowment of historic buildings and natural beauty. The quality of life is further enhanced by the availability of an array of community facilities including a regional hospital, Washington County Community College (formerly WCTC), numerous parks and recreational facilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age and be a high school graduate or equivalent.
- Must have proof of valid driver's license and be insurable by the Cities insurance provider.
- Must be able to document, in writing, all relevant information in prescribed format in light of legal ramifications of such; ability to converse with dispatcher and EMS providers via phone or radio as to status of patient.
- Must maintain EMS level licensing once that level is obtained and at any given time, perform any or all tasks performed by a lower level EMT.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Nature of work:
Performs firefighting, medical service, hazardous materials incidents and disaster response to protect lives, property and the environment.
Performs all other related or similar work as required.
Personnel must be familiar with the ICS command system and will work under the general direction of the Fire Chief or his designee as an integral part of a team.
Personnel receive direct orders from a supervisor who indicates the general work to be performed and outlines the services to be provided. While an employee receives work instructions on the job, employee must have the ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions; ability to effectively maintain a positive working relationship with other employees, supervisors and the public.
Firefighter/EMS Provider
Must have excellent judgment and be able to prioritize decisions and act quickly in the best interest of the patient, must be self-disciplined, able to develop patient rapport, interview hostile patients, maintain safe distance, and recognize and utilize communication unique to diverse multicultural groups and ages within those groups. Must be able to function independently at optimum level in a non-structured environment that is constantly changing.
Must adhere to all guidelines required by the federal HIPAA Compliance Acts.
Required to complete all necessary paperwork by the department, to comply with State, Federal, County, and City Law and Ordinances.
Must maintain the minimum State EMS license level at the time of employment.
Knowledge:
Working knowledge of EMS principles and practices as well as emergency medical techniques and rescue procedures.
Working knowledge of occupational hazards and of safety precautions to be exercised to ensure safe operation of vehicles and equipment to assure the safety of fellow workers and the public.
Environment:
Work is performed primarily in the station, vehicle and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, during day and night shifts. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. Work may involve considerable personal danger, including exposure to fire, toxic substances, diseases such as hepatitis B and AIDS as well as violence from mentally unstable patients, exposure to hearing alarms and other hazards associated with rendering emergency medical assistance.
May occasionally operate fire apparatus, pumps, hose lines, power and hand tools, pneumatic tools, medical equipment, personal computers, and standard office equipment.
Cleans and maintains fire apparatus, ambulance, tools, and equipment in accordance with departmental procedures.
Attends training programs and meetings in town and with outside agencies as required.
Ability:
Ability to execute oral and written instructions in a precise manner. Ability to command and control emergencies under emergency conditions. Ability to perform mathematical calculations and to interpret results.
Ability to perform prolonged physical labor under hazardous and adverse emergency conditions.
Ability to bend, stoop, balance, and crawl on uneven terrain; and the ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture.
Ability to perform quickly, precise, practical mathematical calculations pe1iinent to ratio and proportion of medication and supplies used in emergency patient care.
Must be independent, confident, able to work independently without defined structure, have good stable reasoning ability with ability to draw valid conclusions expediently relevant to patient's condition, often, using limited information.
Must have knowledge and skills relevant to position and be able to implement them in stressful situations.
Must be cognizant of all legal, ethical, and moral obligations inherent within scope of practice.
Ability to communicate verbally; via telephone and radio equipment; able to lift, carry, and balance up to 125 pounds ( 250 with assistance);ability to interpret and respond to written, oral and diagnostic form instructions; ability to use good judgment and remain calm in high stress situation and take on role of 'leader'.
