HISTORY

The Cape May Police Department, serving the City of Cape May and Boroughs of West Cape May and Cape May Point in southern New Jersey, is situated within a National Historic Landmark, with a strong Victorian heritage and significant Coast Guard presence. The department's jurisdiction spans approximately 4.3 square miles, with a year-round population of 5,370 residents, surging to tens of thousands during the summer. To manage the increased summer workload, the department relies on seasonal officers. Dating back to the mid-19th century, the department has evolved from a small force into a team of 22 sworn officers, supported by civilians. Cape May's rich history and enduring charm make it a unique and dynamic community to serve and protect.
