HIRING ANNOUNCEMENT – EMERSON POLICE DEPARTMENT
Now Accepting Applications for
POLICE OFFICER
NJPTC CERTIFIED OR CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN A PTC CLASS, OR SLEO II WAIVER ELIGIBLE
The Emerson Police Department is hiring for the position of police officer. Applications are being accepted until Sunday October 15, 2023. The process will close on the deadline provided or when the first 100 applications have been received.
Police Training Commission (PTC) is required, or if you are currently enrolled in a certified NJPTC class or a NJPTC certified SLEO II, who is waiver eligible.

Below is the timeline for the hiring process. There are 6 elements that must be satisfied for hiring consideration. Each element must be met fully to reach the next phase of testing. Failure to meet any of the criteria will result in elimination from the process. Each phase of the process is competitive, with only the highest independent scores moving forward after each phase.
The elements of the Emerson Police Department hiring process are:
- Police Interview
- Police Committee Interview
- Council Meeting/ Conditional Term of Employment
- Background Check
- Psychological Testing
- Medical Clearance
Minimum requirements to be eligible for hire as a Police Officer in the Emerson Police Department are as follows:
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Is sound in body and of good health sufficient to satisfy the board of trustees of the Police and Fireman’s retirement system of New Jersey as to his/her eligibility for membership in the retirement system.
- New Jersey resident
- Possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license
- Read, write and speak English
- Possess a Bachelor’s Degree (minimum 4 years) in an accredited college or possess an Associate’s degree (minimum 2 years) in an accredited college with a minimum of 2 years of military service OR have a minimum of 4 years of military service
The Police Interview will take place between October 23-27, 2023 at the Emerson Municipal Building located at 1 Municipal Place Emerson, N.J. 07630. The applicant will be contacted by phone to receive the date and time of their interview. Those moving on will be notified by phone or email. Those who do not move on will be notified by email.
The top ten (10) applicants will move to the Police Committee Interview section. The interviews will take place on November 8th& November 9th, 2023 at the Emerson Municipal Building located at 1 Municipal Place Emerson, N.J. 07630. The applicant will be contacted by phone to receive the date and time of their interview. Those moving on will be notified by phone or email. Those who do not move on will be notified by mail.
The top three (3) applicants will be scheduled for an interview with the Emerson Mayor and Council on November 21, 2023 . The finalists will be given a Conditional Offer of Employment pending a successful come of a psychological examination and a Health and Occupational Safety exam. The applicant will be scheduled for a psychological examination and a Health and Occupational Safety exam during the week following the Mayor and Council interview. In the event that an applicant is disqualified as a result of the psychological or the Health and Occupational examinations, the next eligible candidate will be scheduled for the above testing.
The selected candidates will be given a conditional term of employment at the November 21, 2023 meeting of the Borough of Emerson Mayor and Council.
Note: The Emerson Police Department and the Borough of Emerson reserves the right to adjust, modify, cancel or change any part of this timeline or process to meet the administrative needs of the Borough or Police Department.
