Mission

The mission of the Mountain Lakes Police Department is to improve the quality of life in Mountain Lakes by working together with all citizens to preserve life, maintain human rights, protect property, and promote public safety.

 

About

Mountain Lakes is a Borough in Morris County, New Jersey, and a suburb of New York City. As of the 2000 United States Census there were 4,256 people, 1,330 households, and 1,186 families residing in the Borough. The Borough has a land area of 2.91 square miles. The community is primarily residential with the majority of businesses on US Route 46

The current composition of the Department is thirteen Officers and four SLEO II's. Patrol Officers work the Pitman schedule with 12-hour shifts. The Lieutenant, School Resource Officer and Detective work a Monday to Friday schedule.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • New Jersey Police Training Commission (PTC) Certification is a must
  • OR currently attending a NJ certified Police Academy as alternate route (No SLEO II waivers are being accepted at this time)
  • Must be a resident of New Jersey at the time of appointment
  • Must be a United States Citizen
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Must have the ability to perform all the tasks and duties of a police officer
  • Must possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s License
  • Must not have a criminal history and be of good moral character

 

Job Description/General Duties

  • Protect citizens by preventing crime, enforcing laws, apprehending suspects, and monitoring traffic.
  • Prevent crime by explaining and enforcing applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; teaching preventive, protective, and defensive tactics; mediating disputes; patrolling assigned area; responding to notices of disturbances; conducting searches; observing suspicious activities; and detaining suspects.
  • Apprehend suspects by responding to complaints and calls for help, observing violations, and making arrests.
  • Conduct criminal investigations by gathering evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, and interrogating suspects.
  • Report observations and actions by testifying in court.
  • Fulfill court orders by serving warrants and commitments.
  • Maintain safe traffic conditions by monitoring and directing traffic, enforcing laws and ordinances, investigating accidents, providing escort, and reporting unsafe streets and facilities.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Benefits:

  • Starting pay $66,634-$72,085 (negotiable depending on experience
  • Patrol top pay $135,615 plus 5% holiday pay (2026)
