Summary:
Under the supervision and direction of the Department Head, advise, and evaluate subordinates to maximize quality performance, via chain of command; employ discretion in solving problems, maintain public order, prevent crimes, and enforce laws and security regulations. Supervises and coordinates activities of squad of police officers on an assigned shift or unit within the police department by performing the duties listed below. Provides the Department Head with daily reports and information as requested.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Other duties may be assigned; the essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
• Assists in implementation of unit's goals and objectives as directed by the Department Head.
• Performs criminal investigations when assigned.
• Reviews and prepares various reports on operations and activities as directed by the Department Head.
• Assumes active command in emergency situations.
• Establishes a friendly and approachable presence while exercising soft policing techniques when possible.
• Ensures that all responsibilities of the department are carried out according to department and RIAC organizational policies.
• Must have and maintain a strong working knowledge of a variety of practices and procedures, including Federal, State, City laws; 14 CFR Part 139, RIAC Ground Transportation Regulations, 49 CFR 1542, RIAC jurisdiction, RIAC’s Airport Security Program (ASP), and Mutual Aid.
• Conducts daily briefing sessions for members of unit and inspects uniforms and equipment.
• Detains and questions witnesses, victims, and suspects and makes arrests as necessary.
• Conducts preliminary investigations of incidents as necessary; collects and preserves physical evidence, protects crime scene, and reports and records all facts of incident.
• Maintains liaison with federal, state, and municipal law enforcement agencies, courts, community
groups, and others as directed and in conjunction with legal counsel.

• Notifies superior through chain of command of major crimes or disturbances within area and takes necessary action until arrival of superior.
• Answers calls regarding service, illness, accidents, disturbances, crime, or distress and provides necessary assistance or takes appropriate action as needed.
• Reports any safety issues across airport property, such as holes, obstructions, or leaking gas mains etc.
• Provides general assistance and information to staff and/or public.
• Handles post assignments and relief when necessary.
• Perform law enforcement patrol duties. When not performing assigned administrative work, the Sergeant must perform patrol duties.
• Ensures proper vehicular traffic and pedestrian flow in accordance with security plans and laws.
• Communicate effectively, in person and/or by radio or telephone.
• Maintain and operate a variety of law enforcement tools to include lethal and non-lethal weapons, vehicles, computers, and any other police equipment.
• Perform public assistance activities to include first aid to sick and injured persons until EMS arrives; assist motorists; direct traffic; assist and refer persons in need.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Directly supervises employees under their command.
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
• Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work, addressing complaints and resolving problems.


Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Special qualifications include:
• A working knowledge and skill in the use of firearms as evidenced by the ability to qualify with the weapons used in airport police work.
• Law enforcement officers with K9s are not eligible to apply unless withdrawing from the K9 program.
• Must be able to remain focused in situations involving extreme stress.
• Proficient in Microsoft office suite.
• Ability to make decisions under a variety of circumstances.
• A working knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision.
• Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately to a variety of individuals and in a variety of settings.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships.


Education/Experience:
• Must have a minimum high school diploma or equivalent, and United States Citizenship.
• Certification as a Rhode Island Police Officer from the Rhode Island Police Officer Standards &
Training (RI POST).

• Employment as a full-time police officer with RIAC Police Department for at least one (1) year or equivalent supervisory experience with another police department.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
• Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License and be insurable which must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
• Must meet State of Rhode Island qualification requirements to carry weapons used in the performance of duty, and must maintain annual qualifications as a condition of continued employment.
• Must pass a required background check for security credentials which must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.


Physical Requirements: The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
• Prolonged walking and standing.
• Prolonged sitting at a desk for computer use.
• Must maintain a level of physical fitness necessary to respond quickly to emergencies, conduct foot and vehicle patrols, and engage in potentially strenuous physical activity.
