Smithville, Missouri is located along 169 Highway and sits approximately 30 minutes north of Downtown Kansas City. Smithville covers an area of 15.5 square miles and has a current population of approximately 10,500 residents. Over the past two decades Smithville has experienced a steady increase in population that is expected to continue well into the future. The Department is made up of 20 sworn officers: 2 admin, 2 Detectives, 2 School Resource Officers and 14 Patrol Officers. Currently there are four (4) open positions to fill. A typical call volume for our city annually is approximately 4,500 calls for service and does not include officer-initiated activity. Officers are encouraged to do as much self-initiated activity as they are comfortable with, with the additional availability of traffic grants.
Smithville Police Department enjoys a strong relationship with the community. Residents enjoy supporting the department, often stopping by with treats for the officers and never hesitating to come forward with questions or issues. This strong community relationship helps in solving crimes and working proactively with the community to prevent them. Officers take great pride in the events hosted by the department for children in the community as well as adults (e.g. Safety Academy, Junior Police Academy and Citizen’s Police Academy). Smithville Police Officer’s Shop with a Cop program allows officers to help those families in our community who need a little extra help during the holidays and has been run by officers for 12 years now.
