University Police Sergeant

Western New England University is a picturesque private New England university located in the 16-Acres section of Springfield, Massachusetts. The University offers a generous compensation and benefits package that includes tuition remission for full-time employees and their immediate family members. We are currently looking for a qualified individual to serve as a University Police Sergeant.

The Western New England University Police Department is an accredited police department comprised of (18) certified full-time sworn police officers, (6) civilian Community Service Officers, (4) civilian Dispatchers, and (12) civilian Security Staff Assistants. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Criminal Justice Degree is preferred.
  • Experience: Two years’ experience as a certified police officer is required. 
  • Have a Massachusetts Police Training Committee certified police academy or a waiver of equivalency for out of state candidates. See M.P.T.C. website https://www.mass.gov/how-to/request-an-exemption-or-temporary-waiver
  • Be a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 21 years of age
  • Candidates will be expected to pass an extensive background check, psychological & physical exams and have an acceptable driving record.
  • Must possess a valid Class D driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain certification in basic first aid and CPR.
  • Must possess the ability to obtain a Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms – Class A Large Capacity permit in accordance with Massachusetts General Law Chapter 140, Section 131.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The University Police Sergeant is responsible for the direction and supervision of all Department of Public Safety subordinate employees working during his/her shift. Responsible to participate as part of the team engaged in performing various security and police duties to provide protection of persons and University property. The Sergeant enforces laws, rules and regulations; investigate incidents, complaints and crimes; maintains and enforces traffic and parking regulations; participates in crime prevention activities. Working knowledge of the Clery Act and Police Accreditation is preferred.
