Cromwell Fire Department Part Time Firefighter/EMT
The Cromwell Fire Department will be accepting applications for Firefighter/EMT to staff positions on a Part-Time basis. An hourly rate will be offered to cross trained personnel who meet the minimum requirements stated below. Employees who work a minimum of 20 hours a week may enroll into the appropriate district pension program and apply to join the IAFF Local 4662 union. Successful candidates will be required to complete a (1) one-year probationary period. Part -time firefighters/EMT employees will be required to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week and when available to respond on a call back basis to meet the operational needs of the department within a prescribed amount of time. The selection process will entail the following:

Completion of a Cromwell Fire District Employee Application.

Submission of cover letter, expressing your interest in a part time firefighter/emt position.

Submission of current resume, with your job experience and levels of fire/ems training.

Submission of Valid CT Driver's License

Submission of the following Required Pre-Requisites: FF2 Certificate, Valid CT EMT Certification, Proof of Valid CPAT meeting the above criteria. ICS 100, 200, 700, 800.

Successfully pass a written examination.

Successfully pass an oral interview examination and/or practical skills evaluation.

Successfully pass a thorough background check inclusive of Background Investigation, Criminal Records Check, Motor Vehicle Check.

Successfully pass a pre-employment physical & drug screening

Successfully pass a Chiefs’ interview
Those who work the minimum of 20 hours a week may be eligible for:
- Municipal Employee Retirement System (MERS)
- Apply to join IAFF Local 4662 Union.

Required Pre-Requisites
- Firefighter II & Hazardous Materials Operations Certification in accordance with NFPA 1001 and NFPA 472 or 1072
- Valid State of Connecticut Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification
- Valid Connecticut Driver’s License with ability to gain a “Q” or “CDL with A or B” endorsement
- Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test certification (Issued February 1, 2025 or later due by March 11, 2026 at 4pm).
- FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 (Online Self Study Course)
Preferred Requisites
- Valid Connecticut Drivers License with Q Endorsement or CDL A or B.
- At least 1 year experience as a firefighter in an organized fire department.
- At least 1 year experience as an EMS Technician or higher medical service is preferred
- Completion of CT Fire Academy Recruit Program or another equivalent firefighter recruit program
Part-Time Firefighter Responsibilities
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents to provide appropriate services as required including emergency rescue and fire suppression, search & rescue of trapped or injured persons, perform emergency medical and first aid services, preparing reports regarding emergency incidents as needed.
- Possibly drive department apparatus and/or operate on emergency calls or at incident scene.
- Operate numerous types of rescues, emergency and fire suppression equipment and apparatus as necessary; operate, inspect, repair and perform other technical tasks related to maintaining the apparatus, equipment, and facilities in the area of assignment.
- Participate in a variety of fire prevention operations, activities and programs.
- Respond to a variety of hazardous materials incidents, to perform defensive or offensive activities which will be dependent upon levels of certification in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Assist with transportation of patients to medical care facilities; evaluate the condition of patients and assess pertinent information about medical profile and injuries; determine treatment in accordance with EMT training; maintain contact with medical facility to prepare for patient arrival
- Use departmental computer equipment to input, review and access records, information and other various data.
- Prepare emergency medical incident reports regarding patient and incident information.
- Perform other related job duties and related job tasks as assigned by upper-level supervisory staff.
- Must be able to wear proper safety equipment as determined by the department head in accordance with established OSHA regulations
Testing Process
Testing will consist of a written exam and an oral board exam. You will need a passing score of 70% or higher to advance from the written to the oral portion. You will need a passing score of 70% or higher on the oral exam to continue in the process. With a minimum of 70% passing on both portions, your scores will be averaged to determine your overall score and ranking. Extra points will be added to written and oral scores based on residency in Cromwell 2pts, military service 2pts, active continuous volunteer or part-time service with Cromwell Fire Department, Internal Applicant Point Chart based on type and years of service.

Upon review of your application packet and pre-requisite certifications you will be contacted to sit for a written test. For those that qualify the written test will be held at 9:00am on March 18, 2026 at the Cromwell Fire Department, Chief’s Office, 105 Coles Road, Cromwell, CT. Should you pass the written exam with a score of 70% or better, you will be invited to the oral exam on March 25, 2026. You will be contacted via email regarding your status and score.
