Special Law Enforcement Officer Class I (SLEO)

The Borough of Allenhurst is currently accepting resumes and applications for the position of Special Law Enforcement Officer Class I (SLEO) for the 2025 summer season!  

Allenhurst is located just north of Asbury Park; we have a busy business district and our own beach club. It is a great place to start your law enforcement career!

This is an UNARMED, non-sworn position

CURRENT SLEOIs WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR THE JANUARY 2026 SLEOII ACADEMY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • MUST BE A NJ RESIDENT.
  • MUST LIVE WITHIN 30 MILES OF ALLENHURST (AS VERIFIED BY GOOGLE MAPS).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the application deadline.  
  • Must have a valid NJ driver’s license
  • Must be able to read, write, and understand the English language well.
  • Must be in good health and able to perform the duties assigned, in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Must be of good moral character, and shall not have been convicted of any crime or offense.
  • Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.  (If you are still in high school as of May 1, 2025, you are INELIGIBLE to apply). 
  •  IF YOU ARE IN MONMOUTH COUNTY ALPS or a similar MCPA approved LE high school program,
  • YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION.

 Applicants will complete an interview process, and undergo a comprehensive background check.  If you are hired, you will attend an 80-hour class at the Monmouth County Police Academy. The academy starts in mid-May 2025. If you already have a CURRENT SLEOI certification (not past the 3 year expiration limit), you will not have to attend the academy.

Duties include patrolling our beach front and business district on foot or bicycle, issuing summonses for parking and certain motor vehicle offenses, handling minor complaints and issues at our municipally owned beach club, and other duties as assigned.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Patrol the borough of Allenhurst on bicycle, or foot as assigned.
  • Patrol the Allenhurst Beach Club on bicycle, or foot, as assigned.
  • Monitor entry to the beach club to ensure compliance with daily passes, and beach club membership.
  • Parking enforcement: Mark tires, issue summonses for hourly parking zones.
  • Address parking violations, issue summonses or warnings as applicable.
  • Traffic enforcement: Ensure traffic is constantly moving within the business district.
  • Ensure traffic is constantly moving at drop-off zones at the beach club.
  • Security: Perform security check(s) of the beach club as prescribed.
  • Calls for service: Respond to calls, as assigned, within the parameters of the position of SLEOI, write appropriate reports.

 

Many of our prior SLEOIs have been hired as SLEOIIs, and full-time officers here and elsewhere.
