EDISON TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT

Candidates should expect a highly competitive application process for new police officer positions in the Edison Police Department. Those hired will be sent to the police academy by the Township.

There will be a comprehensive hiring process to include an oral board exam, background investigation, medical, and psychological testing. Candidates may be dropped at any point at the sole discretion of the police department. Applicants should only apply if they are prepared to complete all phases of the process. No person shall be hired, or rehired, if that person has ever pled guilty or been convicted of an indictable offense in N.J or any other state; or received the benefit of pre-trial intervention, or an equivalent diversionary program, arising out of an indictable offense, in N.J. or any other state. No person shall be hired or rehired, if that person has pled guilty, been found guilty, or enrolled in any diversionary program arising from any disorderly or petty disorderly person’s offense if such an offense involves moral turpitude.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Edison Township residents are preferred.
  • Be a citizen of the U.S. and a resident of N.J. at the time of application.
  • Possess a valid N.J. driver’s license at the time of application.
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be between 18-35 years old.
  • Be able to read, write and speak the English language conversantly.
  • Shall possess a minimum of 60 credits from an accredited college or university. In lieu of the 60 college credit requirement, an applicant shall have completed 2 years of active military service with an honorable discharge.
  • Be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a criminal offense.
  • Be psychologically and physically fit to perform all the duties of a Police Officer.
  • Be physically capable of meeting the mandated firearms qualifications mandated by the N.J. Attorney General’s guidelines
  • Be physically fit and willing to fulfill all requirements set forth by a New Jersey PTC Certified Police Academy.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS

  • All eligible applicants shall undergo an oral interview by a review committee. Applicants who pass the oral interview may move onto the next phase.

  • One Year Probation
