Must have been granted a waiver for the Academy requirement and/or be up to date with POST and therefore qualify for a future waiver for the Academy requirement

 

The Greenfield Police Department is accepting applications for the position of police officer.  Interested candidates who meet the qualifications for employment are encouraged to apply, and all fees paid are NON-REFUNDABLE under any circumstances. Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications in order to be appointed as a police officer to the Greenfield Police Department.

*Offering a sign-on bonus of $10,000 for CERTIFIED FT Police Officers. The bonus is paid $2,500 upfront, $2,500 after completion of the field training program, and $5,000 after completing year one. *

The qualifications include:

  1. Be a U.S. citizen (by birth or naturalization);
  2. Be at least 21 Years of age as of the date of appointment;
  3. Be able to achieve and maintain POST certification;
  4. Possess a valid Massachusetts driver’s license (or obtain one within 6 months of appointment);
  5. Possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D. certificate (preference will be given to those candidates that have a college degree, military experience or combination);
  6. Be a non-smoker
  7. Candidates may not have any felony convictions or equivalent convictions that would be a felony in Massachusetts;
  8. Have a strong character background;
  9. Must have successfully completed, or have the ability to complete,  the full time Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Full-Time Police Academy in order to achieve basic certification as a police officer (if certified elsewhere, must be able to obtain a waiver from the MPTC);
  10. Must be able to obtain a Massachusetts Class “A” License to Carry a Firearm;
  11. Be willing and able to meet the duties and obligations of a Greenfield Police Officer.

It is also required that you are living within 20 miles of Greenfield (border to border) prior to the end of your "Probationary Period" (one year upon successful completion of the Field Training Program).

All candidates must understand that these basic, minimum qualifications do not guarantee candidates an offer of employment. All candidates will be assessed for their fitness for the position through an entire selection process.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

The Greenfield Police Department welcomes you to apply for the position of police officer with the City of Greenfield.  The recruitment process requires a potential candidate to successfully complete the entire battery of testing, which includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following steps:

Interview Panel:

The interview panel will be held at a time to be determined based on the current staffing needs of the Greenfield Police Department.  Candidates that are invited to participate will be given advanced notice and further instructions at the necessary time.  No prior police experience is necessary to participate.  There may also be a writing assignment given to candidates at the time of the interview.  

Interview with the Chief of Police:

The Mayor is the appointing authority for the City of Greenfield.  The Chief of Police will conduct interviews with selected candidates when an opening is ready to be filled and make recommendations to the mayor.

Conditional Offer of Employment:

This contract is entered into between the candidate for hire and the City of Greenfield.  This contract only extends to a candidate that is offered a position as a police officer.  Once signed, the department will agree to hire the candidate provided all “conditions” are met. All financial obligations relative to the conditional offer are borne by the City of Greenfield.  The conditions are successful completion of the:

  • Background Investigation: which will be conducted by The Greenfield Police Department.
  • Medical Examination: a full medical examination, in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Commonwealth of MA; including a drug screening.
  • Psychological Examination: the psychological may consist of a battery of written tests and interview(s) conducted by a trained psychotherapist.

Those candidates that require initial training will undergo all necessary steps for admission to the police academy.  The specific academy that the candidate will attend depends on multiple factors, but the selection is determined by the Chief of Police.

Physical abilities testing (“PAT”):

The PAT will take place at a time to be determined. Further information relative to the PAT will be posted with other recruitment materials on Policeapp.com.  PLEASE TAKE THE PAT SERIOUSLY! The Greenfield Police Department has seen a significant failure rate at the PAT.  You MUST review the PAT standards and begin training for these events to ensure your success.  Any candidate that fails any of the testing components will be immediately disqualified from further testing for the remainder of this recruitment drive.
