Entry Level Patrol Officer
Recruitment/Selection Process Information

Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy Start Date: January 6, 2025
Minimum Requirements for Patrol Officer Recruit:
Must be at least 21 years of age on or before May 23, 2025 (Academy graduation date)
Must be a United States Citizen
Must possess a High School Diploma or GED Certificate
Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain it as a condition of employment
Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check
Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam
Must successfully pass a pre-employment psychological exam
Upon appointment to the position, must reside within 20-mile radius of the Middletown Police Department and/or have the ability to respond in 30 minutes

Copy of successful completion of the Fit2Serve written exam. The test must have been taken within two (2) years of the closing date of this application period. Schedule through www.Fit2Serveri.com if you do not have this completed. MANDATORY for all applicants.
Copy of successful completion of the Fit2Serve pool training session. The session must have been taken within one (1) year of the closing date of this application period. Schedule through www.Fit2Serveri.com if you do not have this completed. MANDATORY for all applicants.
Completed, signed, and notarized Permission for Release of Information for Criminal Records (form located in DOCUMENTS)
Fitness Test Medical Certificate Form completed and signed by physician (form located in DOCUMENTS) Date of physician's signature must be within a six month period from November 18, 2024 (Date of academy fitness test). This is required in order to participate in the mandatory Academy fitness test.
Proof of Veteran's Status - if applicable (Eligibility requirements located in DOCUMENTS)

Additional Information
Interviews with the Middletown Police Department will be held for eligible applicants at the Middletown Police Department, 123 Valley Road, Middletown, RI. You will be notified of the exact date and time if you progress to this phase in the process. The Town reserves the right to interview the top 20 candidates only, depending on the number of applicants. You will not be eligible to continue in the Middletown selection process if you do not pass this interview.
Educational Points will be awarded to applicants as follows:
- Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice Field = 5
- Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Field = 10
Residency points and Veteran’s Preference points will be added at the end of the interview process in accordance with the Middletown Town Charter Sections 37.032 (B) and 37.034 respectively. Appropriate proof must be submitted prior to the interviews. Applicants will be ranked by their total scores and the Personnel Board will certify the list accordingly.
The Eligibility List will be valid for a period of up to two (2) years from the certification date by the Middletown Personnel Board. The Town reserves the right to abolish the List in accordance with Town Code and establish a new list at any time during the two-year period.
Candidates will then be selected from the Certified List for further consideration.
Pre-employment Background Checks, Psychological Examination, Medical and Pre-employment Drug tests along with additional interviews will be administered for those candidates selected for further consideration and who have accepted a conditional offer of employment. You will not be eligible to continue in the selection process if you do not pass these examinations.
An extensive Background Investigation will be completed to evaluate a candidate's employment, education, military service, criminal record and behavioral history to ensure each candidate meets a high moral and ethical standard. You will not be eligible to continue in the selection process if you do not pass this portion of the process.
Candidates selected will then be appointed as Police Officer Recruits and assigned to attend the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy. Recruits who fail to successfully complete the Academy training course will be removed from the Middletown Certified List.
Upon successful completion of the Academy training course, the recruit will be appointed as a Probationary Patrol Officer and will go through a sixteen (16) week Field Training Evaluation Program with the department.
Upon successful completion of one (1) year as a Probationary Patrol Officer, the officer will be appointed as a regular member of the Middletown Police Department.
