Entry Level Salary: $73,500 

07/01/26-06/30/27 - 1st Year $77,175, 2nd Year $85,995

07/01/27-06/30/28 - 1st Year $81,034, 2nd Year $90,295, 3rd Year $99,673

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY include:
Required at time of application:

  • Must have already taken a CHIP Test no more than 6 months prior to application with a minimum passing score of 35%.
  • Have graduated from high school or possess State Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • US Citizen.
  • Must be 21 at time of application.
  • Possess a valid Connecticut driver’s license.
  • Candidate must not have been convicted under federal or state law for any felony, or Class A or Class B misdemeanor, or domestic violence, or have committed an act which would constitute perjury or false statement.

Additionally, must possess all abilities and skills as stated in the job description, including but not limited to:

  • Ability to use dangerous equipment or material or work in dangerous surroundings.
  • Ability to respect the rights of others and to cope with situations firmly, courteously and tactfully.
  • Ability to instruct others, to help others learn how to do or understand something.
  • Ability to read and understand written material.
  • Ability to write clearly, in detail, using technical terms.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain throughout the course of employment established physical, medical, and psychological requirements.
  • Must be able to satisfactorily complete the Basic Police Officer’s Training program as established by the Police Officer Standards & Training Council and maintain certification during course of employment.

Employment is subject to background/credit check, polygraph, psychological, medical and drug test, upon conditional offer of employment.

Note - per New Haven Civil Service Rules, candidates who fail an exam or withdraw from the process are not eligible to have scores considered within six months of the date of exam.  Only scores from subsequent exams beyond the six-month period are eligible for New Haven. For example: if you took the exam August 1, 2025, but withdrew from the process in December, the date of the next exam you take for consideration for New Haven must be six months beyond the test date, or February 1, 2026. If you were to take an exam before that date, your scores would not be eligible for consideration in New Haven.

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Elm City Local of the CT Alliance of City Police, formerly Local 530, Council 15, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO
