POLICE OFFICER
The West Greenwich Police Department is now accepting applications for Entry Level Police Officer until October 23, 2025.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Be a United States Citizen
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Possess a valid driver's license.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED.
SALARY & BENEFITS:
- $57,600 probationary year not including overtime or holidays.
- Step 1. $64,748 Step 2. $69,116 Step 3. $80,500 as of 7/1/2026
- Longevity five years 4%, 10 years 5%, 15 years 6%, 20 years 9%.
- Clothing allowance fifteen hundred dollars $1500.00
- College Incentive bonuses
- Life Insurance $10,000.
Health Care
- Employees are eligible Blue Cross Health Insurance/Delta Dental single or family plan with a 20% co-pay.
- Health Insurance Waiver: thirty five hundred ($3500.00) - single plan, seventy five hundred ($7500) - family plan.
Pension
- Police officers are entered into the State's Municipal Employee Retirement System.
Additional Benefits:
- Holidays: Thirteen (13) paid holidays per year.
- Sick Leave: Fourteen (14) paid sick days that can accrue
- Vacation: Probationary year-six (6) days after 6 months, years- 1-3 twelve days per year then increasing yearly up to thirty days at twenty (20) years.
- Personal Days: Three (3) separate and apart from vacation time.
- Compensatory time can be earned in lieu of overtime
- All officers guaranteed one (1) day off per week in event of order back
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
13 Police officers cross trained in a variety of items to serve 6500 residents over a 51 square mile town. The west end of town being very rural, and the east end populated with residential plats, hotels, and businesses. The town runs along interstate 95 on the east and the wooded Connecticut line to the west. In addition to patrol officers, there is a School Resource Officer Position, and Detective Position.
TESTING REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must submit a passing written test score and physical fitness test score, administered by a third party testing vendor. These documents can be attached to your application or forwarded to Major James Tiernan at jtiernan@wgpdri.com by October 23rd 2025.
We are hoping to conduct interviews shortly after the applications closing date.
This hiring process is being completed for entry into the January 5, 2026 class at the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy.
