The Wharton Borough Police Department is actively seeking professional, qualified and energetic applicants for the position of a Full-time Police Officer who possess the department’s core values: integrity, respect, service, and accountability. Hours: Full-time
Starting Salary range for an applicant with PTC Certification: $51,414 - $83,861
Starting Salary while in police academy: $37,489 (for alternate routes) $51,414 (upon graduation)

Basic Information:
The Wharton Borough Police Department patrols the Borough of Wharton and the Township of Mine Hill. We currently employ 23 full-time police officers, 1 special class II police officer and 1 special class III police officer. The department provides service to approximately 10,000 residents in a five-mile area of responsibility. Our area of responsibility covers sections of Interstate 80, State Highways 15 and 46.
Minimum Requirements:
- Applicants must be at least 21 years old in order to apply.
- Possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
- Be a high school graduate or possess a general equivalency degree.
- In order to apply for this position PTC Certification is required. Applications will also be accepted if applicant is currently enrolled in an Alternate Route Program. Alternate Route Program Graduates can also apply for this position.
- Have the ability to read, write and speak the English language clearly and intelligently.
- Be a U.S. Citizen and a resident of New Jersey.
- Ability to perform all of the duties and tasks of a police officer.
- No criminal history and of good moral character.
- Must be able to pass the Wharton Police Department Physical Fitness Test for applicants.
The Wharton Police Department Physical Fitness Test for applicants includes a 1.5 Mile Run, Vertical Jump, Push Ups, Sit Ups, 300 Meter Sprint and Bench Press.
Minimum standards in each physical fitness testing area:
1.5 Mile Run 14:40
Vertical Jump 16 inches
Push Ups 34 in one minute
Sit Ups 38 in one minute
300 Meter Sprint 64.3 seconds
Bench Press 84% of your body weight for one repetition
Applicants who continue on in the hiring process must also successfully pass the following stages:
- Resume Review
- Supervisory Oral Panel
- Interview with the Chief of Police
- Drug Testing
- Background investigation
- Medical examination
- Psychological screening
- Licensing by the Police Training Commission
