Our Mission

The Hamilton Police Department's goal is to improve the quality of life within our community.  The men and women of this department are committed to providing professional police services to the city of Hamilton through a fair, impartial, and community oriented approach to law enforcement and public safety.

Our Department

The Hamilton Police Department has been providing services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with very few exceptions for over 120 years. Our department currently employs 15 sworn officers, to include the Chief of Police, the Police Lieutenant, 2 Patrol Sergeants, 2 Detectives, and 9 Patrol Officers. Our department also has a civilian Municipal Code Enforcement Officer. Additional assignments in the department include a school resource officer and, in the spring and summer seasons, a bicycle patrol position.

Our Community

The city of Hamilton was founded in 1890 and is the county seat in Ravalli County, located in the Bitterroot Valley. Hamilton is the largest town in the Bitterroot Valley, which is the setting for the classic book and movie "A River Runs Through It". This is a tale of a family and fly fishing, that captures the beauty of the Bitterroot Valley. The Hamilton area boasts some of the best hunting and fishing areas in the Rocky Mountains. There is easy access out of Hamilton into miles and miles of hiking trails that lead to many high mountain lakes that are scenic and full of fish. If hiking is not your thing, there are several fishing accesses along the Bitterroot River for fishing or a relaxing float to take in the beautiful scenery.

Lost Trail Pass is famous for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Today you can enjoy Lost Trail Pass with multiple hot springs in the area. If skiing is your thing there are miles of downhill and cross-country skiing readily available.

If community events and gatherings are more your style, the city and county host numerous festivals, farmer’s markets, brew fests, Daly Days, the Ravalli County Fair and much more.

The local school district excels both academically and in athletics. The school district has a student to teacher ratio of 16:1. There are many opportunities to get involved in the community in the many civic clubs and associations.

The city has a population of about 5,000 residents and because it is the county seat, routinely serves approximately 20,000 people daily that come to the city to work, shop, eat and recreate.
