The Mansfield Fire Department provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, fire prevention, and emergency management for the Town of Mansfield, Massachusetts. The department operates with a focus on protecting life, property, and the environment through a combination of emergency response, prevention, and community outreach.
The department is staffed by 41 sworn members and one civilian Administrative Assistant. Personnel are assigned across four groups that provide 24 hour coverage, 365 days a year, from two fire stations located on East Street and Plymouth Street.
All Mansfield firefighters are cross trained in emergency medical services. The majority are licensed paramedics, with the remainder certified at the EMT level. This staffing model allows the department to deliver advanced life support care on nearly every call for service. Emergency medical incidents account for approximately 70 to 80 percent of the department’s total call volume.
The department responds to more than 4,000 incidents annually, with call volume steadily increasing over the past several years. These incidents include fires, medical emergencies, hazardous conditions, technical rescues, and service calls. A significant number of these calls occur simultaneously, requiring careful coordination of resources and frequent use of mutual aid.
Mansfield presents a complex response environment. The community includes a major industrial park, a large outdoor concert venue, a regional transportation network, and several miles of interstate highway. These factors contribute to a high demand for both fire and EMS services and require a flexible, highly trained workforce.
The department operates a fleet that includes engine companies, an aerial tower, advanced life support ambulances, and specialized support units. Daily operations include emergency response, training, equipment maintenance, inspections, and pre incident planning to ensure readiness at all times.
Fire prevention and public education are core functions of the department. Personnel conduct building inspections, code enforcement, plan reviews, and community outreach programs. These efforts are designed to reduce risk, improve safety, and build strong relationships with residents and businesses.
The Mansfield Fire Department also leads the Town’s Emergency Management Agency. The EMA supports disaster preparedness, sheltering operations, and large scale incident coordination. The program includes an active volunteer base, specialized equipment, and the ability to support both local and regional incidents.
The department continues to adapt to increasing service demands through data driven planning, regional collaboration, and the development of new programs. This includes initiatives such as community EMS services and the implementation of a field whole blood transfusion capability to improve patient outcomes in critical emergencies.
The Mansfield Fire Department remains committed to delivering professional, reliable service to the community while preparing for the evolving challenges of the future.
Mission Statement:
The primary mission of the Mansfield Fire Department is to provide a range of programs designed to protect the lives and property of the inhabitants of the Town of Mansfield from adverse effects of fires, sudden medical emergencies, or exposure to dangerous conditions created either by nature or people.
About US
The Mansfield Fire Department serves the Town of Mansfield and supports a region with a wide range of residential, commercial, and high demand venues. Mansfield is located in Bristol County and sits along key transportation and event corridors in southeastern Massachusetts.
Mansfield is home to the Xfinity Center, a major outdoor concert venue that can host up to 19,000 guests. During the concert season, this venue brings large crowds, complex medical needs, and increased traffic into the area, requiring dedicated planning and on site fire and EMS coverage.
The town borders Foxborough, which is home to Gillette Stadium. This regional destination hosts professional sports, concerts, and large scale events that draw tens of thousands of visitors. These events impact traffic patterns, mutual aid demand, and regional emergency response coordination.
Mansfield is also served by the Mansfield Municipal Airport, which supports general aviation activity. While smaller in scale, the airport adds another layer of response capability and planning for aircraft incidents and fuel related hazards.
Two major highways, Interstate 495 and Interstate 95, run through or near Mansfield. These roadways carry a high volume of daily traffic, including commercial vehicles, and are frequent locations for motor vehicle crashes, hazardous material incidents, and complex rescues.
The town is also served by the Mansfield MBTA Station, a busy commuter rail stop along the Northeast Corridor. Rail traffic introduces additional response considerations, including passenger incidents, infrastructure emergencies, and coordination with regional and federal partners.
Mansfield’s location places it within a strong mutual aid network with surrounding communities including Attleboro, North Attleborough, Easton, Norton, and Plainville. This regional approach is critical to maintaining effective response coverage during periods of high call volume or simultaneous incidents.
This mix of residential neighborhoods, industrial areas, transportation infrastructure, and large scale venues creates a dynamic and demanding service environment. It requires a high level of training, coordination, and readiness to meet the needs of both the local community and the broader region.
