About the Nantucket Police Department

About Nantucket Police Department

The Nantucket Police Department serves as the primary law enforcement agency for the Town of Nantucket, entrusted with the vital responsibility of ensuring the safety and security of all residents and visitors. Through the enforcement of criminal and civil laws established by the Town and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Department is dedicated to maintaining order, protecting individual rights, and preserving public safety.

The department is structured into four specialized divisions, each managed by experienced leaders and focused on delivering exceptional service to the community:

Operations Division:

This division is responsible for direct public services, including patrol functions, school safety initiatives, and traffic safety.

Detective Division:

This division conducts comprehensive follow-up investigations into reported crimes. It also oversees property and evidence storage, maintains court liaison duties, and manages criminal intelligence functions.

Harbor Master Division:

This division handles marine search and rescue operations, waterways oversight, beach patrols, mooring management, Town Pier supervision, navigation aids, and the lifeguard program.

Administrative Division:

This division provides critical support services for both department personnel and the public. It includes the Emergency Communications Center (e911), the Public Safety IT Network, the Town-wide radio and telecommunications system, the business licensing and permitting office, and fleet and facility management. Additionally, this division manages all ongoing construction projects under the department's supervision.
