JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Animal Shelter Director
REPORTS TO: Bristol Police Chief or Designee
DATE: July 6, 2023
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under general supervision, manage full-time and part-time Animal Control and Shelter employees as well as management of the facilities, grounds, and equipment. Develop and oversee department budget and accounts payable. Oversee the handling, treatment, well-being, and care of all animals admitted to the care of the Bristol Animal Shelter. Establish and direct the operational procedures of the Bristol Animal Shelter. Oversee animal control and shelter operations. Conduct annual employee evaluations. Complete all required reports. Maintain employee schedule and ensure all shifts are properly staffed. Responsible for training employees in accordance with Federal, State, and municipal laws and all applicable professional standards. Ensure that all cages, runs, and the overall shelter facility are clean and properly disinfected. Ensure that all animals are properly medicated per veterinarian instructions and accurately logged. Approve/review all applications for adoption surrenders in a timely fashion. Ensure the shelter meets all municipal and state health guidelines and all safety guidelines and regulations are implemented and followed. Develop and enforce shelter policies and procedures and update shelter policies and procedures from time to time, as needed. Reports directly to the designated Bristol Police Department supervisor.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Management skills such as budget development and monitoring, payroll, employee scheduling, project management, facilities management, and other management tasks.
- Supervisory or leadership experience in an animal shelter environment required.
- Ability to read and interpret documents and perform basic math calculations.
- Able to supervise and create strong, positive team relationships with staff and volunteers.
- Strong interpersonal skills for management of staff, volunteers, vendors/contractors, and interface with the public.
- Experience with and excellence in customer service and the ability to set an example for the staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and handle stressed, injured, and possibly aggressive animals safely and humanely.
- Knowledgeable in: animal behavior, health and well-being that includes nutritional needs; resources of where to seek information; knowledge of common animal diseases, treatments and vaccinations.
- Ability to complete investigative reports proficiently and timely.
- Self-starter, facilitator, organizer, and innovator.
- Able to plan and implement with little supervision and able to work independently.
- Able to multi-task, prioritize in line with organizational priorities, and be able to meet deadlines.
- Ability to effectively communicate with written and verbal skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency with computers – including shelter management software Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other databases and websites commonly used.
- Able to work weekends, nights, and holidays as necessary.
- Able to remain calm in stressful situations and able to handle tense and emotional situations.
PHYSICAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
Must possess sufficient strength and agility to chase, capture, and control stray or vicious animals. Must be able to stand or sit for protracted periods of time, and lift and carry animals. Able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl to inspect and do work on shelter enclosures. Must be able to hear well enough to distinguish the direction of noises and carry on a conversation in person or over the radio or telephone even in the presence of background noise. Must be able to operate an animal control van. Must be able to administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation to both humans and animals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- High school diploma.
- Minimum 5 years of management or business experience.
- Minimum 5 years of demonstrated professional experience caring for animals in a shelter or animal care/veterinary facility.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate degree in business administration, animal science, or a closely related field plus minimum 3 years of management or business experience and minimum of 3 years of demonstrated professional experience caring for animals in a shelter or animal care/veterinary facility.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is a full-time, salaried exempt position, Monday through Friday from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M., minimum 40 hours per week. Nights, weekends, and holidays as may be assigned and directed by the Police Chief or designee. Annual salary of $61,822.43 (paid by-weekly) and benefits as defined by the Town of Bristol Non-Union Employee Benefits Summary.
Employee performance will be evaluated annually by the Police Chief in accordance with provisions of the Town’s Employee Handbook and the Police Department rules, regulations, and operating guidelines.

Due to the physical requirements of this position, the approved candidate shall be required to complete a pre-employment medical screening. A comprehensive background investigation will be completed by the Bristol Police Department prior to the final appointment.
