Warwick Fire Department, RI Public Safety Jobs




Perform skilled firefighting work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; in rendering medical assistance at medical and other emergency scenes; and in operating and maintaining Fire Department equipment, apparatus, and work environment


  • Salary earned while attending academy: $15.00 per hour.
  • Salary earned after successful academy completion: $55,666 includes weekly salary + holidays


  • Must be at least 18 years of age but not more than 34 years of age at time of application.
    • Thirty four (34) year old applicants must not have reached their thirty-fifth (35th) birthday prior to appointment to the Warwick Fire Department.
  • Must be a United States Citizen and furnish a birth certificate or US-INS Qualified for Employment.
  • Must possess and furnish a copy of valid driver’s license.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) prior to start of Warwick Fire Department Recruit Academy.
  • Physical Performance Assessment (PPA) certification, (April, 2020 and later certifications will be accepted); administered by the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs. Follow link for further information; https://rifirechiefs.com/ppa-info/  Or must have passed and been certified by the Candidates Physical Ability Test (CPAT) (January, 2020 and later certifications will be accepted). Must have prior to start of Warwick Fire Department Recruit Academy.
  • Must have no felony criminal convictions
  • Must be able to obtain Rhode Island Emergency Medical Technician license prior to start of Warwick Fire Department Recruit Academy.
    • Acceptable alternatives:
      • Rhode Island AEMT-Cardiac License
      • Rhode Island Paramedic License
      • Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Certification in
        • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT);
        • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT); or
        • Paramedic



  • 60% Written
  • 40% Oral
  • The minimum passing score required on both examinations shall be 70 points.

Note: Five (5) additional points will be awarded to City of Warwick Residents with proper documentation.

          Five (5) additional points will be awarded for Current / Past Military service with proper documentation.


  • Background Investigation
  • Medical Exam with drug screening
  • No Smoking & Drug-free agreements
  • Successful completion of 18-week recruit academy
  • Rhode Island AEMT-Cardiac License must be obtained within two (2) years of appointment to the Warwick Fire Department at applicant’s expense


  • Birth Certificate / Naturalization Papers / Legal Permanent Resident
    • Birth Certificate Originals or Certified Copies can be requested through the office of vital records in the state in which you were born. Rhode Island residents see: http://www.health.ri.gov/records/; or
    • Naturalization Papers or Legal Permanent Resident: Replacements can be attained at the US Citizenship and Immigration Services website: https://www.uscis.gov/n-565
  • High School Diploma / GED (When applicable)
    • High School Diploma / GED (General Education Diploma) or higher.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
    • A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Not state specific.
  • Driving Record
    • A Certified copy of your driving record, obtained within 90 days of this application, from Operator Control Office – Registry of Motor Vehicles of the State in which you reside.
      • RI Residents: dmv.ri.gov Cost: $20.50 (as of January, 2021)
  • Criminal Background Check
      • A Certified copy of your criminal background check, obtained within 90 days of this application, from the Department of Attorney General of the State in which you reside.
        • RI Residents: riag.ri.gov Cost: $5.00 (as of January, 2021)
  • EMT License (When applicable)
        • EMT requirements listed under Minimum Requirements to Apply
  • PPA/CPAT (When applicable)
