Job Requirements
At the time of application, every applicant for a position in the police department shall possess the following qualifications:
- Possess a diploma from an accredited high school or a graduate equivalency diploma (GED).
- Be Act 120 Certified under the Municipal Police Officers Education and Training Commission (Act 120), (MPOETC) 53 Pa. C.S.A. §2161 et seq. or shall have successfully completed Act 120 Training and passed the final exam, prior to the certification of the eligibility list, thus being eligible for Act 120 Certification once hired by the city.
- Be a United States Citizen.
- Be physically and mentally fit to perform the full duties of a police officer.
- Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
- All applicants must have reached their twenty-first (21st) birthday before the deadline for submitting completed applications.
Physical Fitness Test
1 Minute Sit-up
1 Minute Pushup
300 Meter Run
This is a cumulative test. Each event is pass/fail; thus if one event is failed the entire test is failed. Candidates are required to pass with a score at the 50th percentile for each event based on The Cooper Institute data. Pass/Fail: Must pass each event to continue in the testing process.
Written Test
Test is approved by the PA Chiefs of Police Association
The test consists of four (4) segments
1. Math
2. Spelling
3. Grammar
4. Writing
- Must pass with a 70% overall to continue in the hiring process
- Written test is 70% of your final score
Oral Examination
- Answer a series of questions by a board of three (3) individuals
- Must pass by 70% to continue testing
- Oral Exam is 30% of your total score
Background Investigation
If considered as a possible candidate an in-depth background check will be done before the conditional offer of hire
Act 120
Candidates MUST have finished a MPOTEC sanctioned academy and be Act 120 certified prior to the certification of the eligibility list, thus being eligible for Act 120 Certification once hired by the city.
Veterans Points
The Candidate must pass all aspects of the tests prior to qualifying for Veteran’s Preference of 10 additional points.
Must have an honorable discharge. Reservists and National Guard must complete their obligations in order to qualify.
