Position Purpose:

To perform a variety of duties involved in the receipt and dispatch of incoming emergency 911 calls for police, emergency medical and fire services and other emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance.  Dispatches public service units as necessary and in accordance with established policies and procedures.  Uses computer integrated telecommunications systems to coordinate emergency calls.  Relays information and assistance requests involving other law enforcement and/or fire department agencies.  Receives and processes requests for information in the Connecticut On-Line Law Enforcement Communications Teleprocessing (COLLECT) system and from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer databases.  Monitors communication center security equipment, internal and external security cameras and reports and logs suspicious acts, persons and events.  Process public safety provider requests for wrecker and transportation services; perform other duties as assigned.  (The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.)

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of geographic features and streets within the Town of Branford
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures of receiving and processing emergency police, fire and medical calls.
  • Knowledge of procedures used in operating computer aided dispatch and E-911 systems.
  • Knowledge of standard radio broadcasting and dispatch procedures and rules.
  • Knowledge of operation and use of hearing impaired equipment (TDD).
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Ability to type accurately at a speed necessary for successful job performance.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly to emergency situations.
  • Ability to multitask and follow written and oral instructions in a high stress environment.

Supervision Received:  Works under the direction of the Police Administrative Captain.

Supervision Given: None.

Minimum Required Qualifications:   

Education, Training and Experience:

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; No prior telecommunications experience required.  Must have effective oral, written and interpersonal skills.  Successfully pass a background investigation, to include fingerprinting conducted by the Branford Police Department.  Candidates must currently hold and/ or be able to obtain a State of CT Telecommunicator Certification and an Emergency Medical Dispatcher Certification (EMD) within one year of being hired.  Candidates must be able to obtain COLLECT/NCIC certification. 

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

State of CT certified Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD)   Knowledge of local geography.   Knowledge of Priority Dispatch. Certified Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic. Previous dispatch/police/fire experience.  Experience with Nexgen LEAS Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.  Bilingual.

HIRING PROCESS & STEPS:

The Branford Police Department is participating in the Connecticut Police Chief’s (CPCA) hiring consortium.  All candidates must successfully take and pass the CPCA Dispatcher’s Exam prior to application. The exam is currently being held online.  Please visit www.Policeapp.com for more information on the exam and to apply. 

  1. Applicants must pass the CPCA Dispatcher written exam with a score of 70% to become eligible to submit an application.

  3. Applicants are selected to participate in an oral interview panel. 
  4. Chief’s Interview.
  5. Successful completion of a background investigation.
  6. Psychological screening.
  7. Drug screen and ongoing randomized testing.
