The Coventry Police Department is accepting applications from individuals for the position of Entry Level Police Officer.  Lateral transfers are encouraged to apply and will be offered an accelerated application process.  Candidates are required to submit all requested documents when they are due and pass each phase of the selection process in order to proceed onto the next phase. Candidates should be prepared to take the physical agility and written test on October 16, 2021 within the Town of Coventry.  Oral interviews are tentatively scheduled for October 20 and 21, 2021.  Selected candidates will then be required to successfully complete the recruitment class at the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy at a future date, currently scheduled to begin in January 2022.

The Coventry Police Department consists of a compliment of 57 sworn officers and is supported by a professional staff of 17 employees. We provide law enforcement services to a population of approximately 36,000 residents who reside within 64 square miles. Our community is unique in that the eastern part of town is densely populated and our western section is rural.  Our department has opportunities for career advancement to include a detective division, crime scene investigations, and an active regional SWAT team that services our community when high-risk situations arise.  


Individuals who wish to be considered for employment by the Town of Coventry as an Entry Level Police Officer must, at the time of application, possess an Associates Degree; or a minimum of sixty (60) college course credits towards a degree; or have two (2) years of active Military duty; or have four (4) years of Military Reserve/National Guard duty; or be a graduate of a certified Police or Law Enforcement Academy; be a US Citizen; have an active driver's license; and pass all testing requirements.  These requirements include a written test, physical agility testing (which includes a swim test) in accordance with the RI Municipal Police Academy Physical Proficiency Standards, an oral interview, background investigation, psychological test, and a medical examination.

The applicants meeting the minimum basic requirements must successfully complete the following phases of the selection process. Testing Dates, Times, & Location will be emailed to qualified applicants:

  5. Psychological Examination
  6. Medical Examination
