Police Officer

The Egg Harbor Township Police Department is pleased to announce that it will be accepting applications for the position of Police Officer who are not currently certified.

A non-refundable application fee of $60.00 will be charged to all applicants.

The deadline for applications is 11:59 PM, March 17, 2024. All previous applications submitted to the Egg Harbor Twp. Police Department are null and void.

All applicants must take and pass a written examination. The minimum passing score is 70%.  The written examination will be held at the Egg Harbor Township Community Center (5045 English Creek Avenue, Egg Harbor Twp. NJ 08234) on the date of March 20, 2024.  All applicants must report to that location on that date, no later than 5:30 PM in proper business attire.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT QUALIFICATIONS HAVE CHANGED. Review the list of qualifications carefully to ensure that you are eligible for the position.  Per Township Ordinance, to be qualified for this position, the applicant must possess a high school diploma or GED, prior to appointment as an officer.  Failure to meet these qualifications at the time of proposed appointment may eliminate the applicant from further consideration.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR POLICE OFFICER

Applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be a resident of New Jersey.
  • Be at least 21 years of age and no older than 35 years of age at their time of appointment (N.J.S.A. 43:16A-3(1)).
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED prior to the date of appointment as an officer.
  • Possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
  • Have no criminal record.

Must pass a written examination (minimum passing score is 70%).

Must pass a physical fitness indicator test, with minimum scores of:

    • 1.5 mile run in 15 minutes, 55 seconds or less.
    • 300 meter run in 70.1 seconds or less.
    • Vertical jump of 15 inches or more.
    • 24 push-ups in 1 minute or less.
    • 28 sit-ups in 1 minute or less.
  • Must pass a physical examination conducted by a physician selected by Egg Harbor Township.
  • Must be of sound moral character verified by a background investigation.
  • Must pass an oral interview with the Chief of Police/Selection Committee.
  • Must pass an oral interview with the Mayor and Township Committee.
  • Must pass a psychological examination.

TESTING PROCEDURES (sequence may vary)

  • Written Examination
  • Physical fitness indicator test.
  • Background investigation.
  • Oral interview with the Chief of Police/Selection Committee.
  • Oral interview with the Mayor and Township Committee.
  • Psychological exam.
  • Medical exam.
  • Drug screening.

TRAINING 

  • Successful candidates that are hired are sent to the Police Academy, unless the applicant is appropriately certified by the Police Training Commission (PTC). The police academy is a training program that is approximately 22 weeks long.
  • Upon successful completion of the Police Academy, officers are assigned to the Patrol Division and to a Field Training Officer for an additional 16 weeks.

AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS

  1. The applicant was convicted of an indictable offense or is presently under an indictment.
  2. The applicant was convicted of any offense involving domestic violence.
  3. The applicant was convicted of two or more offenses of driving while intoxicated as defined under N.J.S.A. 39:4-50 or was convicted of driving while intoxicated as defined under N.J.S.A. 39:4-50 within the last five years; or similar offenses in any other jurisdiction.
  4. The applicant was convicted of two or more offenses of reckless driving as defined under N.J.S.A. 39:4-96, or similar offenses in any other jurisdiction.
  5. The applicant is currently on probation or has been on probation at any time within the last 12 months.
  6. If the applicant pled guilty or has been found guilty of any motor vehicle moving violation five or more times within the past two years.
  7. The applicant has been dishonorably discharged from any branch of military service or law enforcement agency.
  8. The applicant was adjudicated by a court or found by an employer to have violated any person's civil rights.
  9. The applicant was convicted of an offense involving or touching on previous public office, position or employment. See N.J.S.A. 2C:51-2(d).
  10. The applicant, having been a citizen of the United States, has relinquished his or her citizenship.
  11. The applicant is subject to a restraining order for harassing, stalking, or threatening, or a restraining order for any domestic violence related offense.
  12. The applicant is the subject of or had an extreme risk protection order or temporary extreme risk protection order entered against them.
  13. The applicant sold, manufactured or distributed any illegal controlled substance in his or her life.
  14. The applicant engaged in the unauthorized usage of any illegal drug while employed in a position of public trust.
