The Civil Service Commission announces an open-competitive examination for the position of Police Officer C in The East Haven Police Department. The Department offers the following benefits:
- CALEA Accredited Agency
4 days on / 2 days off schedule
Comp time
CMERS pension after 25 years, 50% of best three years which includes extra duty overtime.
Education incentive
$2,000.00 uniform allowance annually
13 paid holidays (paid out if not used)
3 business days per year
10 Days of vacation after completion of first year, 5 days per year added after every five years of service completed.

SALARY: $ 63,891 per year; $72,907 after one year; $81,618 after two years

Qualifications:
Candidates must meet the following qualifications:
- Valid Driver’s License
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must be 21 years of age
- U.S. Citizen
- Possess a valid C.H.I.P. Card to be scheduled for written exam - CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE C.H.I.P. TEST!
- Pass a physical examination
- Polygraph test
- Psychological examination
- Background investigation in addition to Civil Service testing
- Ideal candidates shall not smoke or use tobacco products of any kind and shall not have any visible tattoos above the neck collar.

Examination:
The examination will consist of the following:
- A valid C.H.I.P. Card must be submitted to be scheduled for the written exam. This test is pass/fail at the 40th percentile;
- A written test which had a pass point of 70% and is worth 2/3rd of the final grade and successful completion of the Integrity portion of examination;
- An oral exam with a pass point of 70% and is worth 1/3rd of the final grade.
Additional credit may be awarded after successful completion of all phases of the exam:
- Candidates who believe they are eligible for Veteran Credit must attach copy of DD214.
- Candidates with college credits may be eligible for the Education Credit and must request an Official Transcript from their college or university be sent to The Civil Service Office, 250 Main Street, East Haven CT 06512 to receive credit.
- Candidates may be eligible for Foreign Language Proficiency Credit by attaining a rating of “Intermediate-High” on a Foreign Language Competency Exam. Candidates who believe they are fluent in a foreign language must submit the “Foreign Language Proficiency Examination Credit Request” form available with the application to The Civil Service Office, 250 Main Street, East Haven CT.
Candidates who are hired must commit to a three year term in exchange for sponsorship through the Police Academy.
